5 Signs That Las Vegas Is Turning Into the Next Big Sports Town

Sin City is rapidly evolving into a major sports town

#5 Las Vegas sports world buzzing about The Oakland Athletics possibly coming to Sin City

The Oakland Athletics have talked a big game about bringing their MLB team to Las Vegas, but one has to wonder if it will happen or not. In fact, between the team seemingly using Sin City as bargaining power, and The Athletics still trying to make a deal happen in Oakland, it might just all be smoke and mirrors. According to team owner, Dave Kaval though, there is a good chance of Las Vegas sports involving major league baseball before too long.

"We're negotiating with different parties. We've had a lot of detailed meetings on some of these term sheets ... pretty shortly, we're going to be announcing a site in Las Vegas because we have to have a real option down in Las Vegas," Kaval said on Friday, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Mick Akers. I think eventually there will be a Major League Baseball team there, and I think there's a real chance that it could be the A's.

#4 Becky Hammon becoming the new coach of The Las Vegas Aces

The Las Vegas Aces have been hunting for a championship ever since coming to Sin City in 2018 and they seem closer than ever to reaching that goal.  Of course, a lot of that has to do with  Becky Hammon becoming the new head coach of the organization, but also due to  Mark Davis taking over as the new owner of the team. This has created a sort of seismic shift in the world of Las Vegas sports, where the team has all the opportunity and resources in the world to finally capture a championship.

#3 F1 Street race in Las Vegas could be a sign of things to come for racing in sin City.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix will be taking place in 2023 under the neon lights of Sin City and it is a huge step for Formula One in the American market. Not only is it a part of three races that will take place in North America in the upcoming schedule, but it could also open the door to other organizations utilizing the street course. Furthermore, with NASCAR supposedly in talks for a street race in 2023, one would have to imagine The city that never sleeps is the perfect venue! They could even do it under the lights like Formula One, making it the first time a road course race happened at night in modern NASCAR history.  That’s a lot of bigs firsts for NASCAR and doing it in Las Vegas could be the next big gimmick for the sport.

#2 Lebron James in a Las Vegas NBA expansion team?

The sports world is built on a lot of what-ifs and one of them is what Lebron James will do with the rest of his NBA Career? While he reportedly has one year left on his contract with The Los Angeles Lakers, the Multi-time NBA Champion made it clear he wanted to play basketball with his son in his final year. How does the world of Las Vegas sports come into this you might be asking yourself? Interestingly enough, there’s a rumor that James will go to Las Vegas when if it becomes an expansion team.

The rumor was laid out by Bill Simmons in “The Bill Simmons Podcast”,  and although it might not be credible, it is an interesting concept. It’s no secret that there have been buzzings about bringing an NBA team to Sin City, but to have Lebron involved in any way would be big. Whether on the court with his son or in the front office, James building up a sports empire in Las Vegas would be a great way to cement the city as the next big sports town.

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders slowly becoming a force in The NFL

The Las Vegas Raiders are slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the AFC West and The NFL as a whole. Not only is that evident by the team making the wildcard round of the playoffs last season, but also due to them choosing former New England Patriots assistant head coach, Josh McDaniels as their new leader during the offseason.  This is great for Las Vegas sports and might lead to The Raiders gaining more attention from the media in the coming years.

Derek Carr was a big part of this transition into contenders and while they came up short against The Cincinnati Bengals, there was a lot of progress made. They beat The Dallas Cowboys in a pivotal week 11 game and  35-32 victory over The Chargers in the final week of the season to earn the playoff spot.  Las Vegas is gaining a lot of momentum and could end up being the next big NFL powerhouse if all goes well. Now, that depends on Carr being the answer to the team's problems and a lot of other factors at play, but one could argue that the pieces are in place for success. It’s just a matter of execution and getting to The Super Bowl for the first time in decades.
