Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (Jan 30 - Feb 6)

Derek Carr's future with the Las Vegas Raiders, Liz Cambage speaks out about her new coach, and so much more on last week in Las Vegas Sports.

#5 Kurt Busch comments on what he expects out of Bubba Wallace in 2022

Las Vegas native Kurt Busch is entering into his first season with 23XI Racing and even has a new teammate in Bubba Wallace. Of course, questions were quickly raised about how the two hotheads would mesh together, especially with how competitive both drivers are, but it appears that Busch has made his expectations of the young driver quite clear.

"I want him to admit what he's weak at, and I'll admit what I'm weak at, and let's go and work together," Busch told The Athletic regarding his new teammate. "I mean, I'm not the oracle or anything, but I feel like I can help him. And I know I can learn things from him because that's how I think I've stayed relevant for 22 years is continuing to learn and being adaptive to the situations."

Whether the two end up being good teammates or not remains to be seen, but this looks like a promising future for both Bubba Wallace and 23XI Racing as a whole. They now have a year of experience under their belt, a new-gen car to mess around with, and a veteran driver in Kurt Busch.

#4 Las Vegas Aces sign A'ja Wilson to new contract.

The Las Vegas Aces have already made headlines this season with the signing of Becky Hammon as their new head coach and have done so once again after announcing that A'ja Wilson would be returning in 2022. The former WNBA Finals MVP was an unrestricted free agent, and while no concrete figures have been posted about Wilson's new contract, she is likely going to make a lot of money off of this deal.

"A'ja is a generational talent both on and off the court, and I'm excited to have her back in the fold with the Aces," new Aces coach Becky Hammon said in a statement. "She has been the leader of this team, and an integral part of the Las Vegas community since the day she was drafted, and I know our fans are ecstatic to once again have her at the forefront of our pursuit of a WNBA Championship."

Despite not leading her team back to the Finals in 2021, Wilson managed 18.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and around three assists per game. She also has star power in Chelsea Gray, Riquna Williams, and Kelsey Plum, who will probably all be happy to have their centerpiece back on the court.

#3 Liz Cambage blast WNBA for for wage disparity

Liz Cambage is coming into 2022 as an unrestricted free agent, but that isn't stopping her from speaking her mind.  Not only is that evident by the fact that she expressed frustration about losing core duties to A'ja Wilson, but also by her claiming she wanted to play for the Los Angeles Sparks before finally being signed by the Aces.

She continued her controversial streak recently by speaking out about the recent signing of Becky Hammon to a max coaching contract. While many in the sports world are happy that Hammon will be getting her million-dollar payday, Camabge took issue with the fact that her new coach will now be paid four times more than her.

"Ah yes the @WNBA," Cambage said in a tweet Tuesday afternoon regarding the new hire of Becky Hammon, "where a head coach can get paid 4X the highest-paid players supermax contract. lmao, and y'all think imma spend another season upgrading my seat on a flight to get to games out of my own pocket."

#2 Josh McDaniels announced as new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

While Las Vegas Raiders fans were hoping that RIch Bissacia would be tapped as permanent head coach after his 7-5 run with the team last year, it didn’t end up happening that way. Instead, the Raiders decided to hire former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, who also spent time under Bill Belichick in New England. The move was a surprise, especially since, Jim Harbough was originally rumored for the role, but McDaniels seems excited about the opportunity to take the Raiders to the next level

"This is one of those iconic places," McDaniels said when asked about his new coaching job in Las Vegas, "and it's a historic organization that has unbelievable history and tradition... It was easy to make the choice."

#1 Josh McDaniels speaks out on Derek Carr’s future as Quarterback

Josh McDaniels has a lot of decisions to make as Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, and one of the most important ones will be what to do with star Quarterback Derek Carr. Last year, Carr was a leader in passing yards and finally helped the team to a playoff berth. However, he also has a 53-70 record as a starting QB and sometimes chokes during key moments. This makes Carr a mixed bag to some and raises questions of whether keeping him is worth it or not.

McDaniels insists that he looks forward to working with Derek Carr to build the team.

“It’ll be a really fun experience for me to continue to build this thing with him as our leader,” McDaniels said. “He’s certainly capable of doing a lot of great things, he’s done them before in his career. I’m just looking forward to getting to know him..”
