What needs to change for the Las Vegas Aces to finally win a WNBA Championship? It all comes down to the playoffs. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, this is usually when they lose their confidence, and end a great year with an early elimination in the postseason. This has been the case for the last three seasons, and it has been frustrating, to say the least.
The Aces had a 21-13 record in 2019, which earned them a spot in the playoffs. The team went on to beat the Chicago Sky in the Conference Finals, before being eliminated by the Washington Mystics in the next round. Fast forward to 2020 and the team would manage to make it all the way to the WNBA Finals but got swept by the Seattle Storm. Another brutal defeat right when they needed to show their abilities the most.
And then there were Las Vegas s results in 2022, which included a first-round bye and then a loss to the Phoenix Mercury. The two teams would go on to have an intense battle in the Semifinals, trading victories multiple times. They were even tied 2-2 at one point before the Mercury won the final game 87-84.
You now see the common theme here- underperforming in the playoffs. Whether this was a result of coaching errors or the squad just not having the right pieces is up for debate.

The first thing Las Vegas needs to do is scout the competition better. They need to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses against each opponent.
The second thing the team needs to do is find a new defensive anchor. Liz Cambage was a godsend during her years in Sin City, but she departed to play with the Los Angeles Sparks. This leaves the team with a huge gap on the roster. They need to to either test the free-agent market or try someone new at the position.
Finally, the team needs to show up during the playoffs. Give us the team that marched their way to the Finals without several of their key players. Give us the team that ran the table for most of the regular season.
It's no secret that The Las Vegas Aces have all the momentum in the world heading into the 2022 season. They have Becky Hammon as their new coach, and they have former WNBA MVP A ja Wilson, who continues to be the swiss army knife of the team. If the team could just put the right pieces around her at the right time, they'll get to the to the championship.
