A questionable email sent by Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden in 2011 came to light this week. The email used a racist trope to describe Demaurice Smith.
The veteran coach accused Smith of having bigger lips than the Michelin tire man. This exchange occuured during the 2011 lockout and Gruden was apparently unhappy with some of the demands being made on Smith's side for the NFLPA. Gruden was asked about the incriminating email and had this to say:
"I was upset... I used a horrible way of explaining it. I don't think he's dumb. I don't think he's a liar. I don't have a racial bone in my body, and I've proven that for 58 years."
Although Gruden issued an apology for the statement, that didn't stop Smith from tearing into him after the email came to light. Whether Gruden faces actions for what he said back in 2011 remains to be seen, but it's obvious that this is already becoming a big deal.
"This is not the first racist comment that I've heard, and it probably will not be the last. This is a thick skin job for someone with dark skin, just like it always has been for many people who look like me and work in corporate America," Smith said.
The NFL also released a statement on the matter that you can read below
"The email from Jon Gruden denigrating DeMaurice Smith is appalling, abhorrent and wholly contrary to the NFL's values," the NFL said in a statement. "We condemn the statement and regret any harm that its publication may inflict on Mr. Smith or anyone else."
