Chips don't have a standard color or denomination.

A control board can sometimes regulate the colors, but they are all different. The numbers are not the same, and they all have different color combinations. People believed that chips of a particular color were more valuable than other chips of a different color. This technique worked to some extent because the chip designs weren't so different, making it easy to group similar-looking chips.
