The original article begins here:
Horror/comedy hybrids are making a big splash in cinemas. So far in 2025, we've seen THE MONKEY by Osgood Perkins, and the wickedly satirical COMPANION, with more bloody treasures on the way. On April 26th, Downtown Cinemas will hold the red-carpet premiere of INfernal, a "heavy metal monster movie"!
INfernal is the latest project from writer/director Eric Mathis. The Vegas-based filmmaker cites George A. Romero and John Carpenter as his primary influences. Mathis prefers to infuse traditional horror elements with contemporary sensibilities, a style that led to his 2022 campfire-tale anthology THE MACABRE being a breakout hit.
In addition to his work behind the camera, Mathis is the owner of Grime House Films. The production studio's name is an affectionate yet gritty take on "grindhouse", a genre of 60's and 70s exploitation films. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez lovingly saluted that style of moviemaking in 2007's GRINDHOUSE.
While Mathis may not have reached the heights of those famous directors, he's determined to make a mark on the Las Vegas film industry. What sets his films apart from other low-budget flicks is the ability to create great stories and characters while surrounding them with high production values, exciting music, and eye-catching visuals. Eric calls it "high concept, character-driven horror."
VEGAS 411 has been enthusiastically covering the burgeoning Sin City movie scene. You can catch up by clicking here, here and here. You can also catch yours truly on a semi-regular basis on David Rosen's PIECING IT TOGETHER, a film-centric podcast that's frequently recorded at Downtown Cinemas. The Rosen family's WAX TRAX RECORDS even provided a shooting location.
But back to INfernal. Borrowing a bit of the premise from EVIL DEAD, the new film involves the summoning of spirits and deadly consequences that follow. But EVIL's "Book of the Dead" is replaced by a heavy metal vinyl record. Playing the album opens a doorway to humorous but demonic situations. Up for grabs are the souls of three goofy protagonists obsessed with the occult. Talk about a needle drop!

“INfernal is not just about scares and laughs—it's about exploring how far people will go to change their destiny, even if it means bargaining with the Devil himself,” said Eric Mathis. “It’s a wickedly fun ride that horror and comedy fans alike won’t want to miss.”
The film features a cast of horror favorites:
• Courtney Gains (known for Children of the Corn, Back to the Future)
• Sky Elobar (The Greasy Strangler)
• Mark Torgl (The Toxic Avenger)
• Pancho Moler (3 from Hell, 31)
• Carl Solomon (acclaimed for his comedic character roles, Joker 2)
The premiere for INfernal will take place at Downtown Cinemas on April 26th beginning with a red carpet at 5 pm. The screening will be at 6 pm, followed by a question-and-answer session. You can get the full details by following this link. Hang out with the stars and have a bloody good time!
